Computer rooms and laboratories |
|
It is useful to differ between computer rooms and computer laboratories. The basic difference lies in the fact that computer rooms are intended for the instruction with a lecturer, while computer laboratories are not. That means that in computer rooms space has to be provided for the lecturer and presentation equipment, you should that the lecturer has easy access to every work station, and make sure that the lecturer, the blackboard/whiteboard and the projection are visible from all work stations.
Computer laboratories are intended for independent study and work on computers, and do not require space for the lecturer and presentation equipment. Computer labs, therefore, usually have more work stations than computer rooms of the same size.
Equipment of a laboratory or a classroom depends on their purpose (type of instruction which will be held in them) and the number of work stations. E.g. equipping classrooms in which courses on basic computer skills will be held is different from equipping classrooms in which advanced classes for computer professionals will be held (such as Cisco Academy or Microsoft MOC courses).
Details that should be taken into consideration:
- The lecturer should have access to every work station. Distance between desks should be no less than 90 cm, and it is recommended that it is 120 cm. Also, the first row of desks should be at least 1.5 metres from the front wall of the classroom, and it is recommended that it is 2 metres. The aisle between the desks should be at least 90 cm.
- The length of a desk (work station) should be at least 90 cm. The recommended length is 120 cm. If more than one student works at the same computer, the length should be greater. The width of the desk should be at least 80 cm (when notebooks are used, the width can be less).
- Projector should best be fixed to the ceiling, using a ceiling carrier. The services of professional companies which deal in that business should best be rented for the setting up of the screen and the projector. For connecting the computers and the projector, good quality (shielded) cables and splitters should be used. The distance at which the screen will is set depends on the width of the picture you wish to display and the characteristics of the specific projector.
- Optimum number of work stations in computer classrooms is 12. The greatest distance between the screen and a work station should not exceed 8 metres.
- The projection on the screen should be entirely visible and readable from all work stations. It often happens that the lower part of the projected picture is too low and cannot be seen from all work stations (the view is usually blocked by a monitor).
- A classroom should have at least one whiteboard wider than 120 cm. It is useful to put whiteboards in different places in the classroom, e.g. one whiteboard can be placed on the back wall of the classroom.
- The choice of chairs is very important. Chairs should be ergonomic and easily movable (on casters).
- All the infrastructure and cables should be out the way not to cause hazard.
- Classroom walls should be painted in brighter colours. It is good to decorate the walls with paintings or pictures.
- The illumination in the classroom should be planned in such a way that the part in which the students are is well illuminated, while the part with the projector is dark. Daylight should be avoided.
