Improving Computer Science Curriculum in Elementary Schools

Abstract

Today in elementary schools we educate kids for the work in the middle of 21. century. Which computer science knowledge they need and which is the proper way to learn them? What task of education process can we developed in computer science education? How to prepare kids for "lifelong learning"? The main role of the teacher is to direct pupils, how to creatively use information technology.

Here are two examples: - the first one is about new version of programming language Logo - so called "Terrapin Logo". Programming language Logo is made at MIT`s USA with intention that kids can prepare their own programs. This version involve new multimedia technology at simple and encouraging way, and therefore it is very interesting for the kids.Another example use a software for dinamic geometry "Geometria Sketchpad", which describes how computer can become educational tools for geometry teaching.

Here is prepared one model of teaching computer science which can be realised with our available technology and personnel's without further investments.

Information technology in education we can use at least in the two ways: - the first to learn kids how to use computer technology on adequate way and - the second to use new technology for advance whole education process and to improve also the teachers knowledge not directly involved in PC technology.
