EU's Framework Programme (FP) is the EU's main instrument for financing research in Europe.

FP was proposed by EC and approved by the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. Framework programmes cover a five-year period, with the last year of an FP being the first year of another FP.

The Framework Programme has been implemented since 1984. The Sixth Framework Programme (FP6), on the other hand, started in 2002 and is to expire in 2006. It started fully functioning on 1st January 2003, and its total budget amounts to EUR 17.5 billion.
