British Council was founded in 1934 as a voluntary organisation under the title of British Committee for Relations with Other Countries. In 1938, the first overseas representatives were appointed in Egypt, Poland and Portugal. So far, British Council has opened its offices in 227 cities in 109 countries worldwide.
