For each of the 5 disciplines listed above there is a Standing Committee consisting of leading scientists in particular fields. The Committees are responsible for the identification of scientific priorities, forming strategies and developing research plans.

Six instruments are implemented in each field:

• Exploratory workshops exploring possibilities of scientific cooperation; top down approach in calls; 2-3 day workshops
• Networks of scientists and institutions; mostly interdisciplinary; top down approach in calls; three-year researches
• European Research Conferences (EURESCO); divided into fields; held once every two years, focusing on one topic at a time
• Programmes - long-term scientific activities focusing on individual scientific issues; 4 to 5 year programmes
• European Cooperative Research Projects (EUROCORES) - mobilising national funding of broad and important issues
• ESF - Scientific Forward Look - a medium and long-term projections and analyses of future scientific development in interdisciplinary fields and the impact on EU's scientific policy
