European Science Foundation (ESF) is an association of 76 organisations from 29 European countries with a seat in Strasbourg. All of them are scientific research institutions. Since it was founded in 1974, ESF has coordinated a number of pan-European scientific initiatives, and its flexible organisational structure makes sure that it will promptly respond to new challenges in science.

Five standing committees coordinate scientific research activities in five interdisciplinary fields.

HAZU (Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts) is the Croatian representative and coordinator for cooperation with ESF. As such, it has its representatives in all the five standing committees.

Membership criteria are presently being reviewed. Therefore, it is not possible to apply for membership at the moment. Applications will be considered in 2004.
