Back in 1985, 17 European and EU countries joined their forces with a vision and ambition to help and encourage European companies working on similar or identical projects. By sharing their knowledge, experience, ideas and funding, they would be encouraged to establish links and networks with a common goal: to strengthen the competitive position of the said companies in the global market.

At first there were 10 projects within EUREKA, whilst only in 2002 there were 171 newly registered projects and 2 new umbrellas. As many as 857 projects are under way. The initial number of 17 EUREKA countries has increased to 34 full members, with three more countries participating in EUREKA projects through NIP (National Information Points) network. They are currently just a step away from becoming full EUREKA members.

It should be emphasised that EUREKA is one of the first initiatives for research and development to greet the participation of Central and Eastern European countries in 1992. In 1998 a NIP was opened in Croatia, followed by EUREKA office at the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2000.
