UNESCO was constituted in November 1945. It officially started functioning in November 1946, when 20 countries joined in. Presently there are 188 member countries.

UNESCO's main goal is world-wide contribution to peace and stability by promoting and encouraging cooperation between countries in the fields of education, science, culture and communication.
