Background

The background can be subtle, nice, interesting or distracting and unappealing. The best background is the one that does not seem like it is the foreground. Its colour should emphasize the content of the page and be related to it. Background can be simple or patterned.

It is the simplest to use simple, single-colour background, which makes the text easily readable.
Professional-looking web pages often have clean appearance and white background.

Black (dark) background gives a page dramatic look, but if it appears on every page it becomes boring, so the use of such background should be restricted to homepages only. There is also a possibility of problems with printing, since the dark background is printed as well.

The easiest method is to take a clear colour in Photoshop and enrich it with different filters (e.g. Add Noise etc.).

Patterned backgrounds can be created from jpeg pictures, gifs and repeating textures

When dealing with patterned background it is important to make the borders of repeating patterns neatly continuous and not let them show. A repeating pattern should have a simple non-eye-straining structure. Wallpaper-like background is very rarely suitable for a page and it would better be avoided.

Background of every web-base homepage does not have to be the same, but all the pages should retain the same style. The homepage background has a simple repeating pattern, but very often white-background pages look a lot better.

Very interesting backgrounds can be achieved by photographing or scanning of papers, leaves, rice, textile, flowers etc. They can also be bought or obtained as freeware or shareware.

If you want to use a big picture for the background, be careful to incorporate the text in such a way that it does not struggle for visibility with the background or that it does not cover the most important parts of the picture. Such background functions best with little text. The usual screen width resolution is 1024 pixels, so it is good to make the picture background 1100 pixels to avoid part of the background to be repeated.
